In Wisconsin, you must be at least 15 years and 6 months of age (15 ½) to obtain an Instruction Permit
Anyone who is learning to drive a car or light truck (Class D), motorcycle (Class M) or commercial motor vehicle (Classes A, B and C) must first obtain an instruction permit. Permits are issued at all DMV customer service centers located throughout the state

To obtain an original (first) Class D instruction permit, you must fulfill the following requirements:
- Provide proof of U.S. citizenship, legal permanent resident status, conditional resident status or temporary visitor status
- Provide proof of name and date of birth
- Provide proof of identity
- Provide proof of Wisconsin residency if you are 18 years of age or older
- Provide your Social Security number (you can fulfill your proof of identity requirement by presenting your Social Security card)
- Pass the appropriate knowledge, sign and vision tests
- Pay the appropriate driver licensing fees
- Complete a Wisconsin Driver License Application MV3001
If you are under the age of 18, you must fulfill these additional requirements:
- Be at least 15 years and 6 months of age
- You must be enrolled in a certified driver education program. Your Wisconsin Driver License Application MV3001 must be signed by the instructor in the proper certification area and your first behind-the-wheel lesson must be conducted within 60 days of the date signed on MV3001
- If you have not completed your driver education course and are still activity engaged, your driver license application MV3001 must be signed by the instructor in the proper certification area and your first behind-the-wheel lesson must be conducted within 60 days of the date signed on the MV3001
- If you have completed your driver education course, your driver education school must submit your course completion electronically to the DMV
- You must have the signature of a parent, step-parent or other adult sponsor, or under certain circumstances file proof of insurance.
- You must be enrolled in a school program or high school equivalency program, have graduated from high school or have been granted a declaration of high school graduation equivalency, or be enrolled in a home-based private education program, and not be a habitual truant

A graduated driver license (GDL) has passenger and hour restrictions to reduce risk. GDL helps keep novice drivers (ages 15 1/2 to age 18) out of high-risk driving situations, such as driving at night or with multiple peer passengers, while giving them the opportunity to gain experience and develop their driving skills in lower-risk situations

Wisconsin residents UNDER 18 years of age may obtain a probationary driver license if they fulfill the following requirements:
- Are at least 16 years old
- Have passed an approved driver education course.
- Have an adult sponsor
- Complete a Wisconsin Driver license Application form MV3001 – including your Social Security number
- Provide proof of U.S. citizenship, legal permanent resident status, conditional resident status or temporary visitor status
- Provide proof of name and date of birth
- Provide proof of identity.
- Have held an Instruction Permit for at least six months
- Have been violation free for six months
- Have 30 hours of driving experience (10 of which must be at night)
- Are enrolled in a school program or high school equivalency program and are not a habitual truant, or have graduated from high school or been granted a declaration of high graduation equivalency, or are enrolled in a home-based private education program
- Pass the driving skills test
- Pay the necessary fees

Acceptable documents for a Wisconsin driver license or identification (ID) card are:
- Proof of name and date of birth
- Proof of identity
- Proof of citizenship or legal status in the U.S.

You must pass a knowledge test. There are 50 multiple-choice questions on the knowledge test, based on the Wisconsin Drivers Manual. A score of 80% is required to pass. To pass you must get 40 out of 50 questions correct
