15-15½ years old
- Sign up with a driver training school
- The driver training school will send Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) a waiver electronically so you can get your permit
- Get your permit 1-10 days before you start your course. Holidays and weekends are included
15½ or older
- If you are enrolled in a driver training course, follow the steps above for 15-15½ years old
- If you are not yet signed up for a driver training course:

- You need to pass the knowledge test before you can get your permit
- If you do not take a driver training course, you can get a permit but you will have to wait until you are 18 or older to get your driver license
- If you do not take driver training, you will need to wait until you are 18 to get your license
- Finish your application online or make an appointment to finish at an office
- If you are taking a driver training course, do this 1-10 days before you start the course
- Bring proof of identity

- Your parents must provide proof of their identity and relationship to you. Bring a parent with you to sign the parental authorization form
- If you cannot bring a parent, have them fill out the Parental Authorization Affidavit form, have it notarized, and bring it with you to the office
- Provide your social security number
18 or over
- Sign up for a Traffic Safety Education course and they will send Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) a waiver or if you choose not to take a Traffic Safety Education course, take the knowledge test at a training and testing location
- Pre-apply online to receive your Washington ID or driver license number and schedule an appointment
- If you have a social security number, make sure Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) adds it to your record when they issue your permit
- Pass a vision test
- If you brought acceptable identification documents, have your photo taken
- Pay the instruction permit fee
- If you completed everything online, you can print a temporary non-photo instruction permit. You must carry it with you. The permit will get issued the date of the completed transaction
- Keep the temporary permit with you until the card arrives in the mail. It should arrive within 7 to 10 days
- Get an instruction permit and have it for at least 6 months
- Successfully complete an approved driver training course
- Complete at least 40 hours of daylight and 10 hours of night driving with someone who has been licensed for 5 years or more
- Pass the driving test at any Driver training and testing location
Get your license:
Online:
- Have a WA photo instruction permit
- Your parent or guardian must be with you so they can give permission online for you to get your license
- Pay the licensing fee
- Print the receipt. It's your temporary license. Since it doesn't include your photo, you cannot use it as ID
- Your permanent license will have the same photo as your instruction permit or
WA ID card. DOL will mail it to the address on file
At a driver licensing office location:
- Make an appointment first
- Ensure your driver training school has entered your course completion and exam scores
- The driver training school has 24 hours to enter your exam scores in the system once you’ve passed each exam
- If the driver training school has closed and you need assistance, email DOL at tse@dol.wa.gov
- Bring a parent with you to the licensing office to sign the parental authorization form. If you can't bring a parent, have them fill out the Parental Authorization Affidavit form and have it notarized. You must bring the notarized form with you to the office
- Show proof of identity
- Provide your Social Security number or sign a declaration if you don't have one
- Pass a vision test
- Have your photo taken
- Pay the fees

You must pass a knowledge test consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions based on the Washington Drivers. A score of 80% is required to pass. To pass you must get 32 out of 40 correct. If you don't pass, there may be a waiting period before you can retest.
