You are required to pass a two-part knowledge exam on a computer in a DMV customer service center or in a classroom at participating high school. The exam tests your knowledge of traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques. Exam questions are taken from information in the Virginia Driver's Manual. All ten traffic sign questions in Part One must be answered correctly before you can take the general knowledge exam in Part Two. There are 35 questions on Part Two. You must score at least 80% to pass Part Two (answer at least 28 questions correctly)

A physical exam is not required to obtain a Virginia Learner’s Permit or Driver’s License, but if you have a mental or physical condition that affects your ability to drive, then you must provide the DMV with a medical evaluation from your doctor. A DMV representative will evaluate you to determine whether your driver’s license should have any restrictions
