What is the minimum age to get an Instruction Permit in Rhode Island?

The minimum age to get an Instruction (learner’s) Permit in Rhode Island is 16 years old

How Can I Get A Limited Instruction Permit?
  • A Rhode Island drivers permit can be issued to any Rhode Island resident who is 16 but less than 18 years of age and has completed the 33 hour driver education course certified by the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI). For more information call CCRI (401) 825-1214
  • Applicants who have completed a course through CCRI and passed the written exam, will be given a green CCRI certificate. Bring the certificate along with the License/ID/Permit Application, a birth document, and social security card to any DMV branch location. All documents must be originals
  • Applicants who have completed a driver education class with an approved curriculum at a driving school other than CCRI must come to the DMV headquarters in Cranston with the class completion certificate to take a computerized knowledge exam.
  • This permit is valid for one year or until the applicant turns 18, whichever is greater. A road test may not be given until the permit is held for six months, however a road test appointment may be scheduled at the time a permit is received. Make sure that you schedule your road test with the DMV before the one (1) year Limited Instructional Permit expires
At What Age Can I get a Limited Provisional License?

To get a Limited Provisional License, you must have held the Limited Instructional Permit for at least 6 months and not have been convicted of a motor vehicle violation during that timeframe. You must also provide an affidavit signed by a parent or guardian stating that you have completed a minimum of 50 hours of driving experience with a supervising driver with 10 of those hours at night

When Can I get a Full Operator's License?

You must be 17 years old but less than 18 years old, you must hold a Limited Provisional License for at least 12 months and not been convicted of a motor vehicle violation during the preceding 6 months

Is a written test required to get a Rhode Island Instruction (learner’s) Permit?

You must pass a knowledge test consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions based on the Rhode Island Drivers Handbook. A score of 80% is required. You must answer 40 out of the 50 questions correctly to pass the Rhode Island knowledge exam.  Applicants that fail to pass the knowledge exam must wait at least 8 days before retaking the exam.
