The minimum age to get an Instruction (learner’s) Permit in Rhode Island is 16 years old
To get a Limited Provisional License, you must have held the Limited Instructional Permit for at least 6 months and not have been convicted of a motor vehicle violation during that timeframe. You must also provide an affidavit signed by a parent or guardian stating that you have completed a minimum of 50 hours of driving experience with a supervising driver with 10 of those hours at night
You must be 17 years old but less than 18 years old, you must hold a Limited Provisional License for at least 12 months and not been convicted of a motor vehicle violation during the preceding 6 months
You must pass a knowledge test consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions based on the Rhode Island Drivers Handbook. A score of 80% is required. You must answer 40 out of the 50 questions correctly to pass the Rhode Island knowledge exam. Applicants that fail to pass the knowledge exam must wait at least 8 days before retaking the exam.
