  • Complete high school driver education course OR enroll with a licensed driving school before going to the NJ MVC
  • First-time drivers seeking a New Jersey driver’s license must complete the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program to obtain a basic license, requiring you to pass various tests. The road test may be taken only upon successful completion of the knowledge and vision tests.
  • Graduated Driver License Program: Drivers in New Jersey receive their driving privileges in phases. First, they receive a Permit or “Probationary” license, with driving practice. Then, they obtain the “Basic” driver license.

Tests include:

What is the minimum age to get a New Jersey driver’s license?

You must be 16 years old to get a New Jersey driver’s license. Drivers under 21 years old will be issued a Youth Operator License which will expire on the driver's 21st birthday

What are the Steps After Applying for a New Jersey Learner’s Permit?

After Applying for a New Jersey Learner’s Permit:

  • If you are at least 16 years old, hold your learner’s permit for at least 6 months and practice driving with a licensed driver who is 21 or old. Also, enroll in a driving school. After 6 months, if you reached the age of 17, you can apply for a probationary license
  • If you are at least 17 years old, you have to wait at least 6 months after receiving your permit before you are allowed to schedule a road test.

You must hold your probationary license for a year.  With a probationary driver’s license, you can drive unsupervised, but with restrictions. You are required to display a reflective decal on both your front and back license plates.  Also, you cannot drive with more than one person in the car who is under 21 years old and you are not permitted to drive between the hours of 5 AM and 11 PM
