FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s)

  • You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a New Jersey Learner’s Permit
  • Visit the NJ MVC page for applicants getting their license for the first time: https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/license/initiallicense.htm
  • Complete high school driver education course OR enroll with a licensed driving school before going to the NJ MVC
  • First-time drivers seeking a New Jersey driver’s license must complete the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program to obtain a basic license, requiring you to pass various tests. The road test may be taken only upon successful completion of the knowledge and vision tests.
  • Graduated Driver License Program: Drivers in New Jersey receive their driving privileges in phases. First, they receive a Permit or “Probationary” license, with driving practice. Then, they obtain the “Basic” driver license.

Tests include:

  • Vision test
  • Knowledge test
  • Road test

You will also need 6 Points of ID

You must pass a knowledge test consisting of multiple-choice questions based on the New Jersey Drivers Handbook.

You must be 16 years old to get a New Jersey driver’s license. Drivers under 21 years old will be issued a Youth Operator License which will expire on the driver's 21st birthday

When applying for your Learner's Permit, you must present proof of your identity and New Jersey residential address:

  • Certified, U.S. issued Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • Two (2) documents to prove your address

If you are under 18 years old, a licensed driver that is at least 21 years old should bring you to the MVC office

A vision test is required to obtain a New Jersey Learner’s Permit and Driver’s License

A physical exam is not required to obtain a New Jersey Learner’s Permit or Driver’s License

A photograph will be taken at the New Jersey MVC

After Applying for a New Jersey Learner’s Permit:

  • If you are at least 16 years old, hold your learner’s permit for at least 6 months and practice driving with a licensed driver who is 21 or old. Also, enroll in a driving school. After 6 months, if you reached the age of 17, you can apply for a probationary license
  • If you are at least 17 years old, you have to wait at least 6 months after receiving your permit before you are allowed to schedule a road test.

You must hold your probationary license for a year.  With a probationary driver’s license, you can drive unsupervised, but with restrictions. You are required to display a reflective decal on both your front and back license plates.  Also, you cannot drive with more than one person in the car who is under 21 years old and you are not permitted to drive between the hours of 5 AM and 11 PM
