How long do I need to have an Instruction Permit?
  • If you are 18 and under, you must practice driving with a licensed adult driver for at least six months before a driving test can be taken. You must complete behind the wheel instruction and be age 16 to take the road test. Exceptions are for farm work and medical licenses
  • If you are 19 or older, you must practice driving with an adult licensed driver for at least three months before taking a driving test

If applying for a Minnesota Instruction Permit:

Does a Parent Need to Take Me to the Permit Test?

Yes, bring a parent or legal guardian to the permit test. You must obtain the written consent of a parent, legal guardian, Department of Children and Families, or boarding school headmaster. Written consent must be given by signing the Driver's License, Learner's Permit, or ID Card application. If the person giving consent is NOT a parent, proper documentation of authority must be shown at the time of the permit test.
