MICHIGAN DRIVER'S LICENSE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s)

You are eligible to get a Learner’s Permit in Michigan when you are 14 years 9 months old. That is Level 1 of the Michigan Graduated Driver's License process. Parental consent required if driver is under 18 years old

What is the minimum age to get a driver’s license in Michigan?

  • The minimum age to get a Level 2 restricted driver’s license in Michigan is 16 years old
  • The minimum age to get a Level 4 full driver’s license in Michigan is 17 years old

The Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) consists of three licensing levels:

  • Level 1 License: a supervised learner's license issued to teen drivers at least 14 years 9 months old
  • Level 2 License: an intermediate license that limits passengers and the unsupervised nighttime driving for teen drivers at least 16 years old
  • Level 3 License: a full-privilege driver license issued to teen drivers at least 17 years old after they have successfully completed all the previous instructional and driving requirements

Michigan's driver education curriculum is split into two segments and is required for all teen drivers under age 18:

  • Segment 1 driver education is offered before the driver begins supervised driving. It requires a minimum of 24 hours of classroom instruction, a minimum of six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and a minimum of four hours of observation time in a training vehicle. Before beginning Segment 1, a teen must be 14 years, 8 months of age and have parent/guardian permission
  • Segment 2 driver education is offered after the driver has held a valid Level 1 License for at least three continuous months and has acquired 30 hours of driving experience time including a minimum of two hours of night driving. Segment 2 includes a minimum of six hours of classroom instruction

Originals or certified copies with a raised seal or stamp are required for proof of Social Security number, identity, citizenship/legal presence and residency. Photocopies or faxes of documents will not be accepted

Level 1 License:

Segment 1 Certificate of Completion, proof of a valid Social Security number, U.S. citizenship or legal presence if not a U.S. citizen, identity and at least two documents establishing Michigan residency

A parent or guardian signature is also required upon application (Residency can be confirmed through documents in the parent's name if the family relationship can be established by other forms of documented proof)

Level 2 License:

Segment 2 Certificate of Completion, Level 1 License (held for six months), proof of a valid Social Security number, legal presence, identity, at least two documents establishing Michigan residency and the Driving Skills Test Certificate. A parent or guardian signature is also required on the application.

Level 3 License:

The Level 3 License is issued automatically to teen drivers who are at least 17 years old (with parental authorization by signing for the teen's Level 2 License), held a Level 2 License for at least six months, and been crash and violation-free during the prior 12 months. Tickets, crashes, suspensions and ignoring license restrictions will extend the time required to obtain a Level 3 License.
