FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s)

You are eligible to get a Learner’s Permit when you are 16 old in Massachusetts. Parental consent required if driver is under 18 years old

  • Choose the type of learner's permit that you want: a REAL ID Massachusetts permit (valid for federal purposes) or Standard Massachusetts permit (not valid for federal purposes)
  • Start your application online
  • Bring your required identification and completed application to an RMV Service Center
  • Pass the Learner's Permit written exam

Parental consent required if you are under 18 years of age

Permits are valid for 2 years. If your permit expires, you have to reapply and retake the exam

The minimum age to get a driver’s license in Massachusetts is 16½. All other requirements must be met

These are the requirements for applicants between the ages of 16½ and 18 to obtain a driver's license:

  • Have a valid learner's permit for at least 6 consecutive months before taking the road test. (Any suspension will invalidate the permit and the 6 months will start again when the suspension has ended)
  • Maintain a clean driving record for at least 6 consecutive months before taking the road test
  • Successfully complete a driver education program, which includes 30 hours of classroom instruction; 12 hours of in-car, behind-the-wheel training; and 6 hours of in-car observation of other student drivers
  • Complete at least an additional 40 hours of supervised, behind-the-wheel driving as shown by a certified statement by a parent or guardian. The RMV will accept 30 hours of driving supervised by a parent or guardian if the applicant completes a driver skills development program. A parent or guardian must participate in 2 hours of instruction on the driver’s education course (unless they have completed one within the past 5 years)
  • Pass a final exam

Completion of a driver’s education program is required of all Class D and M license applicants under the age of 18. To be eligible for a driver education certificate, you must complete the following: Classroom instruction of 30 hours consisting of Massachusetts motor vehicle law and safe and proper operation of a vehicle on-road instruction, including 18 hours of instruction in a vehicle and including a minimum of 12 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and 6 hours of observation while another student is taking behind-the-wheel instruction.

To get a learner's permit, driver’s license, or Mass ID in Massachusetts, you’ll need to provide:

  • Proof of citizenship or lawful presence
  • Proof of your Social Security number
  • Proof of Massachusetts residency

You’ll also need to decide between a Standard driver’s license/ID and a REAL ID driver’s license/ID. To get one, you’ll need to provide additional documentation and come into an RMV service center

Yes, bring a parent or legal guardian. You must obtain the written consent of a parent, legal guardian, Department of Children and Families, or boarding school headmaster. Written consent must be given by signing the Driver's License, Learner's Permit, or ID Card application. If the person giving consent is NOT a parent, proper documentation of authority must be shown at the time of the permit test

A vision test is required to obtain a Massachusetts Driver’s License.
