You are eligible to get a Learner’s Permit in Louisiana when you are 15 years old

You do not have to get a Learner’s Permit if you are at least 17 years old

A parental signature on the application is required if driver is under 18 years old

You are eligible for the Louisiana Graduated Driver Licensing program and hold an intermediary license when you are 16 and over

An intermediate license is the second stage in Louisiana's graduate license program Teens are restricted in the times of day they may drive and the number of passengers as well

After holding the learners permit for at least 180 days and upon reaching at least sixteen years of age, a minor may apply for a Class "E" Intermediate License. In order to be issued a Class "E" intermediate license, the minor applicant must successfully pass a road skills test and a vision test

To have the Intermediate license issued, you must present the following items to a local Office of Motor Vehicles:

• Your Learner’s Permit, certified birth certificate, and a Completed Certificate of Required School Attendance obtained from your school
• Proof of Residency
• Home schooled students must present the Home Study Approval Notification Letter or the Registered Non-public School: Registration Confirmation letter from the Louisiana Department of Education
• Your parent or legal guardian must accompany you with his picture I.D and
• Provide a written statement attesting that you have a minimum of fifty (50) hours of behind the wheel driving experience with a licensed parent, guardian, or adult at least twenty-one (21) or older. At least fifteen (15) of these hours must be nighttime driving

In order to apply for a Louisiana license, the applicant must:

• Show Proof of Residency
• Have proof of legal presence in the country
• Complete the appropriate driver education course for their age,
• The 38 hour driver education course consists of 30 hour classroom instruction and 8 hours behind the wheel instruction
• The pre-licensing course consists of 6 hour classroom instruction and 8 hours behind the wheel instruction
• Meet minimum physical and mental requirements and pass a vision, knowledge and road skills test
• The road skills test may be administered by OMV or a certified third party provider
• In order for the OMV to administer the skills test, you must present a vehicle with a current safety inspection sticker, current license plate validation sticker, current certificate of registration and proof of current liability insurance, and proof of residency. Please check the Office Location section of our web site to determine if your local office has specific road skills test hours. Skills test are NOT given by OMV during inclement weather

FIRST TIME CLASS E LICENSE AGE 17

To be issued a Louisiana Class E driver’s license issued you are required to furnish the following:

• Certified birth certificate or meet ID requirements (See Section I, Policy 6.00 and Policy 6.02)
• Social Security Verification
• Certificate of successful completion of a thirty-eight (38) hour drivers education course OR a pre-licensing course approved by the Department of Public Safety & Corrections
• Completed Certificate of Required School Attendance obtained from your school
• Home schooled students must present the Home Study Approval Notification Letter or the Registered Nonpublic School: Registration Confirmation letter from the Louisiana Department of Education
• Your parent or legal guardian with picture I.D. In case of joint custody, only domiciliary parent may sign.
• You must take and pass the vision, knowledge and road skills test.
• You have the option of going to a state certified Third Party Tester to be administered a road skills test. You must report to the Third Party Tester with Test History Form or a valid learner's permit issued by the Office of Motor Vehicles

FIRST TIME CLASS E LICENSE AGE 18 OR OLDER

To be issued a Louisiana driver’s license you are required to furnish the following:

• One primary identification document (See Section 1, Policy 6.00 for a complete list of acceptable primary identification documents)
• Social Security Verification
• Certificate of successful completion of a thirty-eight (38) hour drivers education course OR pre-licensing course approved by the Department of Public Safety & Corrections
• You must take and pass the vision, knowledge and road skills test
• You have the option of going to a state certified Third Party Tester to be administered a road skills test. You must report to the Third Party Tester with Test History Form or a valid learner's permit issued by the Office of Motor Vehicles. A Third Party Tester can lease a vehicle to you to take the road skills test. They also can administer the test in inclement weather and at your convenience, usually anytime of the day. If you provide your own vehicle, proof of insurance is required and it must have a current safety inspection sticker, proof of residency, current license plate validation sticker, and current certificate of registration

 A physical exam is not required to obtain a Louisiana Learner’s Permit or Driver’s License

A photograph will be taken at the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) office

15 and 16 year old applicants must hold their Learner’s Permit for at least 180 days before they are allowed to apply for an intermediate license.

If you are least 17 years old, you can obtain a Driver’s License immediately after providing poof of completion of Driver’s Education
