FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s)

You are eligible to get a Learner’s Permit in Washington D.C. when you are 16 years old

Parental consent required if driver is under 18 years old

You are eligible to get your Provisional License when you are 16 ½ and meet the other requirements, including:

  • Hold Learner Permit for 6 months
  • 40 hours of Driving Practice
  • Pass Vision Test

When applying for a Learner’s Permit or Driver’s License in Washington D.C. for the first time, you must bring:

  • Proof of Name and Date of Birth
  • Proof of Social Security Number
  • Proof of Residency (under 18 years old)
  • Proof of Parental Approval (if under 18 years old)

A parent or guardian  must accompany you if you are under 18 years old or you must bring written consent

A vision test is required to obtain a Washington D.C. Learner’s Permit and Driver’s License

A physical exam is not required to obtain a Washington D.C. Driver’s License, but any serious medical conditions must be reported

A photograph will be taken at the Washington D.C. DMV office

You must hold a Learner’s Permit for at least six months and get no traffic violations to be eligible for a Driver’s License
