FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s)

You are eligible to get a Supervised Learner’s Permit in Delaware when you are 16 years old. Parental consent required if driver is under 18 years old

You are eligible to get your Intermediate Driver’s License when you are 17 and over and meet the other requirements, including:

  • Hold an Unsupervised Learner’s Permit for 6 months
  • Complete Driver’s Education
  • Pass Vision Test
  • Pass Written Test
  • 50 hours of Driving Practice, including 10 hours of night driving

When applying for a Learner’s Permit or Driver’s License in Delaware for the first time, you must bring:

  • Proof of Identity
  • Proof of Social Security Number
  • 2 Proofs of Residency
  • Drivers education certificate (under age 18)

A sponsor must accompany you in order to sign the learner permit application if you are under 18 years old

A vision test is required to obtain a Delaware Learner’s Permit and Driver’s License

A physical exam is not required to obtain a Delaware Driver’s License

A photograph will be taken at the Delaware DMV office

  • If you are at least 18 years old, you must hold their learner’s permit for at least 10 days before applying for a Driver’s License. If you are under 18 years old, you must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice.  If you are over 18, you may apply for your license in 10 days
  • If you are under 18, you must complete at least 50 hours of practice driving and be supervised at all times.  If you have no violations, your permit automatically becomes a valid license after holding your permit for 12 months
